Anoukâs face looked like itâd been used as a pin cushion by a particularly large hedgehog from sleeping against an ancient floor in the middle of a ballroom. âSince when did we step into an Agatha Christie novel?â she complained. âI had no intention of being part of a murder investigation. Ever.â
âIt wasnât on my bucket list, either, but at least those murders get solved by the end of the night,â I said. Over and over, weâd tried to figure out if Leonâs odd entrance was involved in the murder allegations, but without evidence, it was merely an exercise in masochism.
We had nothing.
Finally, Blaise announced that we could all go home. âFor now.â Outside, the sun had already begun to stretch over the tops of the Pyrenees. Streaks of gold and pink reflected off of the snow capped peaks, and birds were tuning their morning songs. The glitter of my dress felt obscene, like I was executing a perfect walk of shame except I hadnât done anything scandalous.
I swear.
Blaise held the doors open and tipped his head as we left, although he didnât apologize for keeping a village of innocent people locked in a manor home all night without their phones. I caught his eye, probably against his will, and I didnât let it drop. âWas it worth it, Captaine?â I asked, carrying my sensible heels over my arm as we stepped into the terraced gardens. The stone walkway was cold on my bare feet, but I held the discomfort for the moment.
Simon stood next to him. He at least had the grace to look embarrassed as he handed us back our cells, but Blaise was blunt. âJustice demands nothing less.â
âAh, those vague ideals of justice, fraternity, liberty that the French so love.â
Blaise glared. I could tell he didnât trust me as far as he could throw me. Too bad. I wasnât going anywhere. Not that I wanted to rock the boat, but I didnât mind a few ripples.
âCapitaine, if I may, where was the body found?â
âWhy?â He was instantly suspicious.
âItâs just a little unsettling to go home not knowing where a murder took place. Was it near the town?â
âYou donât have to worry about that, Madame DuMont. It was outside of Bordeterre. When do you leave town, by the by?â
I gave him a genuine smile. âActually, Iâm staying indefinitely. I quit my job in Louisiana.â
He started in surprise, and I got genuine shivers catching the gendarme off-guard. It was fun to unbalance the infuriating capitaine.
âA midlife crisis?â he asked.
Really? I furrowed my brows. âWhy does everyone call it that? What if itâs not a crisis, Capitaine? What if itâs merely finding what you were always meant to do now that you have the time and resources to do it?â
âA lovely sentiment, to be sure. And what exactly is it that you will be doing?â
âTo be determined. I intend to take my time and find something that excites me. Do you plan on letting everyone in the area wait until
